As I did not stay in this hotel and mostly only do food and restaurant reviews, that is what this review is about. As a global food and restaurant critic, blogger, and reviewer, it was unfortunate that I was not able to sample this restaurant's cuisine; not for not trying though. After looking around to see if the restaurant was very busy, I noticed it was rather empty; but many of the tables did have the usual reservation signs up that is customary for German restaurants to do even though they may not have anyone actually reserved (it is really a marketing and visualization thing). I should mention that prior to going in, I spoke to several couples heading in themselves who advised me that they did not have any reservations and was just hoping to get in. After watching the host seat those individuals, I approached the host and asked if he had room for one. He looked at me with a smile, and went to the kitchen area (which was visible) to speak with what I assume is the Chef and the kitchen staff; all of which could see me standing there patiently waiting the response. After about a minute, the host comes back and informs me that they don't currently have any room for me. This surprised me a bit, but knowing that it was not the hosts responsibility to make the call, I said that it was unfortunate, but thanked him and left. When comparing the menu to other restaurants in the area, there are several meals that appear to be similar, but it does have several meals that you won't find anywhere else in Ettal. Price wise, it seems a bit on the higher end, so definitely a couples type of place, unless you are in the mood to easily spend over 100 Euro for a family of three. As for the view, it is very nice. Hopefully next time I stop in to ask for service they will have room.
We ate at the restaurant twice. We could reserve a table on short notice. The kitchen opens at 4 pm. The food was very tatsy and the prices are according to the quality. The Zwiebelrostbraten was very good, but unfortunately the beef was from Canada.
Excellent location in Ettal, friendly and professional staff, good service, delicious food, free parking for guests.
This hotel is an example how it looks if guests come by themselves and the owners don’t need to do anything. We stopped there for just one night. Interior from late 80’s (bathroom early 70s...). The first person who usually faces guests is one at the reception. The expression of the lady was rather bored. The room we got was very noisy due to a fan (from kitchen?) and due to thin walls and floor. We had to listen to our Japanese neighbours talking till late night. Not enough toilet paper in room. When we ran out of it, nobody was available at reception. By chance I found some in the cupboard at hall. The food was not bad but nothing excellent you would remember and what makes you to stop in the future again. And one more small remark. Picture on the wall was some photo of Toronto, or Montreal. Me, having hotel in Alps, would hang on the wall some photos of a beautiful scenery from the Alps. There are many ways how to make this place more interesting. And it won’t cost big money. Let’s start with nice smile...it’s free.
The place is very nice.. the food in the restaurant was excellent...especialky the apple strudels... excelent...
Charming place, clean, quiet, and, above all, authentic Bavarian! Lovely and warm reception, very accommodating service. Great view of the Ettal Abbey and the Alps. Incredible breakfast, highly recommended!
Quaint and quiet inn. Stunning views of the Alps and monastery. Rustic restaurant and the German continental breakfast is delicious.
